Chelsea has reached an agreement with Rennes to sign 28-year-old goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Who will either challenge Kepa Arrizabalaga for the position or directly become the starter. The BBC reported on Monday about the agreement that both clubs have reached on the future of the Senegalese goalkeeper born in France. The operation would be official this week.
Kepa, who arrived at the ‘Chelsea’ in 2018 as the world’s most expensive goalkeeper (80 million euros paid to Athletic) made a mistake on Sunday that cost Chelsea the second goal against Liverpool (which won 0- 2 to Frank Lampard’s). Lampard said afterward that
“Kepa made a clear mistake and he accepts it” and that his obligation is to support the 25-year-old goalkeeper. “Kepa must continue working and have support around him.” The Chelsea manager explained that on Wednesday in the Round of 32 of the League Cup will be Willy Caballero.
Mendy managed to keep his clean sheet in 9 of 24 matches played in the last Ligue 1 (which was not resumed after the stoppage due to the coronavirus pandemic), while Kepa achieved it 8 times out of 33 Premier matches (which did complete) played. Mendy’s save percentage is 76.3 percent and he concedes a goal every 114 minutes. Kepa’s percentage is 53.5 percent and he receives a goal every 63 minutes. As for the success in the passes, Kepa’s is 79.7 percent, by 70.1 Mendy.
Edouard Mendy started at Cherbourg and in 2015-16 he played for Marseille B. He belonged to Reims between 2016 and 2019 when he signed for Rennes, where his stage seems to be coming to an end. Although born in Montivilliers (France), he is international for Senegal (so far in 8 games).
